Electric vehicles (EVs)

Electric Vehicles (EVs)

At K.U.Leuven there is a varied research on electric vehicles (EVs). Firstly, research is done regarding the impact of EVs on the electrical grid and the integration of EVs in the concept of a smart grid, including coordination algorithms for charging EVs intelligently (Linear). To facilitate coordination and successful grid integration, a robust ICT infrastructure is required.

In cooperation with Flanders Drive, the concept of inductive charging EVs (contactless charging) is investigated. Besides, business models and market models are necessary for the introduction of electric vehicles and for the charging of the vehicles (e.g. how to pay for the electricity at public charging stations, etc.). Finally, Electa is also involved in Smart Grid Flanders, a Flemish smart grids technology platform, which brings together business, government and academia to push the development and rollout of smart grids by 2020. One of the working groups concentrates on grid-connected vehicles.
