Scientists from the Catholic University of Leuven (K.U. Leuven), the technology institute Vito and Distribution System Operator Eandis, plan to install electricity meters and smart appliances in 100 homes in Flanders. Their goal is to manage energy flows more economically, and make room for clean energy. This project is called Linear (Local Intelligent Networks and Energy Active Regions). It is a collaboration between industry and research institutes. The Flemish government, as well as the industry, supports the project financially with budgets for innovation. Linear is a key project for Flanders to realize a transition towards sustainable energy supply, and is one of the projects to take-up a leading position within the European innovative regions. Linear is one of the building blocks of the EIT KIC InnoEnergy, in which the Benelux co-location centre has the theme ' intelligent and energy efficient buildings and cities', a close fit with the Linear topics. Research on smart grids is part of the Flemish governmental initiative: "Flanders in Action" (ViA). The Linear project attempts to develop a green and dynamic urban region in Flanders.
